There are some movie experiences that change you.
The fibers that make up the delicate blanket of your life are temporarily unthreaded and laid bare….and these few movie-going experiences become some of the patchwork that colorfully emblazons your life’s quilt. Bright squares of colorful memory that stand the test of time; and can be viewed again and again – each time, giving you something new to reflect on.
Apocalypse Now, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Star Wars, Jaws, Rear Window, Blade Runner, Animal House. All are such films standing as among the greatest ever created. They leave a mark on our lives forever. We can look back years from now and see that mark and when it was so carefully etched.
In similar fashion, Your Highness leaves such a mark.
And that’s not a compliment.
Kenneth Branagh fans will be glad to know the actor-director brought his Shakespearean sensibilities to Marvel Studios’ latest superhero picture, THOR. But mild-mannered moviegoers will be happy Branagh didn’t forget to have fun while shooting it.
THOR—featuring svelte 27-year old Australian soaps actor Chris Hemsworth as the Norse thunder god—is the next chapter leading up to Marvel’s motion picture superhero summit that will be next year’s AVENGERS. Both IRON MAN and its sequel had clips and cameos that referenced the “Avengers Initiative” and started putting together the puzzle pieces.

This one picks up where the last one left off, which is being the best fucking action film series out there right now. Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster have sprung Vin Diesel from jail and are now fugitives on the run. They have made it to Brazil, but are waiting for Vin to catch up. It takes longer to sneak through customs when you’ve got twelve dufflebags of protein shakes. Jordana gets to show off her real life Portuguese speaking abilities, but I doubt this series will ever have an installment set at Yale University, although never say never. She’s holding a friends baby and then has to run out of the room and vomit, and the friend asks if she’s told Paul Walker yet and she says no. I thought this was weird because it’s pretty common to be sickened by the sight of small children and nothing to keep a secret about, but it turns out she herself is pregnant. Ah, movies and their depiction of pregnancy, they always remember the puking, they always forget the big swollen breasts. Once Walker hears the news he know life has changed and he’s going to have to keep them on the run forever so that she never has time to contemplate one of those non-sexy mum haircuts.

Bookended my (last) week nicely with a couple shows featuring venerable virtuoso bassists. Last Monday I checked out Mike Watt at the Grog Shop. Friday I saw Geddy Lee with Rush at Quicken Loans Arena (the lamest venue re-name ever, although Progressive Field comes close). The Rush performance was filmed by Sam Dunn for future DVD release. Dunn, you’ll recall, is the fan-turned-director who produced the excellent documentaries Global Metal, Iron Maiden: Flight 666, and Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.
Took some nice photos at the Rush concert after the band’s PR people at Atlantic floated me credentials.
